Clear the Air Tennessee

Tennessee is one of the nearly two dozen U.S. states and territories that do not have comprehensive smoke-free laws. It also belongs to “Tobacco Nation,” a group of states with smoking rates that exceed not only the national average, but that of many of the most tobacco-dependent countries in the world.

Smoke-free environments help protect people from exposure to secondhand smoke, which contains more than 7,000 chemical compounds, 69 of which are known carcinogens. These environments can also encourage smokers to quit and reduce the number of cigarettes they consume per day.

Through the Clear the Air Tennessee program, Truth Initiative® is supporting on-the-ground action by offering funding to engage young people on the issue of smoke-free environments in their communities.

About the grant

Truth Initiative will award approximately six grants of up to $2,000 each to engage youth and young adults (ages 15-24) to educate local businesses about the importance of smoke-free air and encourage voluntary adoption of smoke-free policies by businesses and public spaces. Youth-serving nonprofits and government entities (e.g., health departments, high schools, colleges) located in Tennessee are eligible to apply.

The goals of the grant program are to: 

  1. Engage, mobilize and educate youth and young adults on the importance of smoke-free environments and how to create these voluntary environments in their community
  2. Assist at least one business or public space to adopt a voluntary comprehensive smoke-free policy

 

The application period for this grant has ended.
